I Remember My 17th Birthday

It was the first time in years that my birthday was on a school day. Otherwise, every year it was the summer vacation that took my chance, of celebrating my birthday with my school friends, away. It was an unusual special feeling to be in school on your birthday. You feel like the most important person in your class and everyone wants to be with you because well, you've got chocolates under your desk for everyone. But now being in the final year of schooling that feeling kind of took a backseat. For a lot of us, as we grow up, the idea of celebrating our birthday changes to a more intimate affair.

It was my 17th birthday. At midnight my mom and sister surprised me with a cake and gifts. I would always find out about the surprise but this time I missed it. After a long day at school I was looking forward to the special dinner planned with my family.

My friend and I would often spend some time after school talking in the street. I would drag my cycle while we slowly walked towards the main road. We would pause near the corner and talk till we would be the only ones in the uniform around. That day was no different.

I remember cribbing about how a friend of mine was not here on my birthday. I was complaining how I am not so important for her. She'd been reminding us for days that she'll not be here today. My friend tried to cheer me up but it was all in vain. So she walked me home.

As I was walking towards my room I noticed the door was shut. Strange. My door is never closed. My mom was also smiling more than usual. I brushed it off considering it was my birthday and she was just too happy. My mind was having its own battle to decide if I should open the door. And then I did.

I remember being flabbergasted. I remember being filled with joy. I remember the treasure hunt I played to find my gifts. I remember how my friend tricked me into believing she wouldn't be here on my birthday while planning all this out. I remember dancing with all these amazing people who went out of their way to make my birthday special. I remember those little moments that make me want my school days back. I remember my 17th birthday being one of the special ones. I remember!
